SPARRING, TRAINING, OR HEAVY BAG BOXING GLOVES

Everyone understands the importance of having the proper tools for the task. But which boxing gloves is better for sparring, training, and heavy bag work? When selecting the appropriate glove, different ounces, sizes, and features must all be examined.

Let’s begin with the ounces…

Boxing gloves are typically available in sizes of 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 ounces, allowing you to graduate from concentration mitts to heavy bag sessions to sparring (generally 16 to 18 oz and above).

Gloves weighing 12 ounces or less are ideal for hitting pads or a heavy bag. The lighter weight of these gloves, sometimes known as “bag gloves,” allows you to practice punching with speed while maintaining hand protection. Consider switching to a heavier ounce if you discover you require more cushioning for your hands when doing heavy bag exercises.

Benefits and tips

The benefit of having more weight on your hands is that your punches will last longer. Not only will you be able to increase your punching volume, but you’ll also be able to throw those blows at a much faster pace!

When you’re ready to spar with a partner, switch to the heavier gloves. These sparring gloves feature additional cushioning, which will protect your partner from hard strikes.

More ounces…

14 oz, 16 oz, and even bigger gloves depending on your size can be useful all-around. They’re great for hitting pads, heavy bag work, general conditioning, and sparring. When thicker gloves are utilized for pad or heavy bag exercises, the repetitive strikes with larger gloves build strength, which translates to power!

Benefits and tips

It’s crucial to consider your physical size while deciding which boxing gloves to use for sparring, training, or heavy bag rounds. If you’re 5’7″ and 140 lbs, choose a light pair of gloves (10-12 oz) for pad or heavy bag exercises, and a heavier pair for partner drills and light technical sparring. If you weigh 200 pounds or more, however, you should start with a pair of 14-ounce gloves.

Aside from your weight, the size of your hands is also important to consider. Avoid trying to force your hands into gloves that are too small for you if you have a big hand circumference.
